“Which machine should I play?” is the question every first-timer asks. Our honest answer: pick one that’s easy to follow, at a rate that makes your budget last. No machine is designed to make you win. Some are just much easier to understand. Here’s what Japan’s own beginner guides suggest, and why.

Pachinko: the Sea Story series

What Japanese guides say: DMM’s English beginner guide recommends “Big Sea Story 5 SPECIAL” and other machines in the Sea Story (海物語, Umi Monogatari) series for first-time players, because they’re simple and easy to understand (DMM).

Why it’s easy to follow:

  • Bright sea-creature symbols that are easy to read: three matching is a jackpot.
  • A classic, uncluttered style.
  • A long-running series that appears in national rankings. Check the PiDEA and P-World rankings for current popularity. Each hall chooses its own line-up, though.

Spec note: a Japanese pachinko glossary lists P Big Sea Story 5 Special at about 1/319.6, a middle spec, with a kakuhen loop (ppps.jp). So jackpots can take a while. TODO: confirm on Sanyo’s official page.

Pachinko: amadeji (sweet-digi) machines

If you’d like to see a jackpot and the bonus animations in a short session, look for amadeji (甘デジ) machines. SANKYO defines them as machines with jackpot odds of 1/100 or better, with fewer balls per jackpot (SANKYO). Many popular series have amadeji versions, often labelled 甘 or with odds around 1/99 on the spec panel. See pachinko machine types.

Pachislot: the Juggler series

What Japanese guides say: DMM’s pachislot beginner guide suggests the Juggler series, such as I’m Juggler EX, as a good starting point. Its system is simpler than more complex pachislot machines (DMM).

Why it’s easy to follow:

  • It’s an A-type: payouts come from real bonuses, not long AT sequences (types explained).
  • A GOGO! lamp lights when you’ve hit a bonus. Then you line up the 7s or BARs.
  • Minimal screen menus, so there’s nothing to “follow” in Japanese.

Kitadenshi publishes the full probability table for My Juggler V, including BIG and REG odds and payout rates for each setting (Kitadenshi). We explain what those mean (and why you can’t know a machine’s setting) in settings explained.

For anime fans: pick your franchise, then the rate

If you’re here for the anime, the “beginner” choice is often the show you love. You’ll recognise the scenes even if the system is complex. Most anime titles today are AT smart slots or smart pachinko, which are livelier and harder to follow at first (smart slots explained). Browse the machine database and our anime machines guide.

Tip: watch for 30 seconds behind a player (from a polite distance) before you sit down. It’s a natural way to see how a machine behaves.

Quick answers

What is the best pachinko machine for beginners?

DMM, Japan's biggest pachinko portal, suggests the Sea Story series (for example Big Sea Story 5 SPECIAL) to first-timers because it's simple and easy to understand. 'Best' here means easy to follow. No machine is designed to make you win.

What is the best pachislot for beginners?

DMM suggests the Juggler series (for example I'm Juggler EX) because its system is simpler than most pachislot. A lamp lights up when you've hit a bonus, and you line up the symbols.

Are amadeji machines good for beginners?

Amadeji machines have jackpot odds of about 1/100 or better, so you're more likely to see a jackpot and the bonus animations in a short session. Each jackpot pays fewer balls. It's a pacing choice, not an advantage.

Should I start at 1-yen or 4-yen?

Many visitors start at 1-yen (pachinko) or 5-yen (pachislot), because your budget lasts longer. Newer machines may only be in the 4-yen or 20-yen sections.
